Frequently asked questions

You can check your ridge height with a standard tape measure, which will give you an indication as to whether the space is convertible. However, the only real way to know for sure is to invite us over to have a look! We will fully assess your property, checking head height as well as keeping an eye out for anything else that may cause issues with your project.
As a rule of thumb, you need 2.2m between the top of the floor joist and the bottom of the ridge beam.
There are many types of loft conversion. The type that is right for you will predominately depend on the type of property you own. You can find out more information on our Types Of Loft Conversions post.
Get in touch! You can give us a call, send us an email, or reach out via our contact page. We will book you in for a chat about what we can do to help, and understand your goals. Once we've discussed the process of a conversion, and figured out exactly what we can do for you, we'll send you a comprehensive and individualised quote.
The length of time it takes to convert your loft does depend on what you are having done, how large you want your extension to be, and the current layout of your home. With many years of experience behind us, we can say that on average a loft conversion takes between eight and ten weeks to complete.
Of course! We love to showcase our work and introduce you to our many satisfied customers. It's also a lovely opportunity for you to meet the team of tradesmen who will be carrying out the work on your project.
From the signing of the contract it can take 4-5 weeks for clients to approve a set of plans. We will do everything we can to make this process faster if a client is in a hurry.
We've all heard stories of tradesmen who fail to get back to you with a quote. We make it our policy to return your quote to you within our week after the initial site survey; faster if possible. Once you have received your quote, rest assured that this figure is not set in stone. Adjustments can easily be made to incorporate any elements you may wish to add or remove.
A party wall agreement is required if your home has a wall that is connected to another property on either side. Each neighbour will need to be informed or the proposed works using a party wall notice form, at least two calendar months before the intended start of the build. The party wall agreement is there to protect you and your neighbour from issues that may arise due to work done on the party wall. By law, your neighbour can insist you have a party wall notice before the work starts. The Brighton Loft Co. is happy to advise you on this process and if necessary put you in touch with one of our certified party wall surveyors.

If your property is not in a conservation area* or is not a flat, you have permitted development rights
(PD). This means you can usually develop your loft space without needing to gain planning permission.
Your development will need to keep within the PD constraints i.e. terraced properties are allowed to
develop an additional 40 cubic metres of extra space. Semi-detached and detached properties = 50 cubic
metres.

Yes. We are a contractor that has tradespeople covering all aspects of domestic building work, whether this be fitting new kitchens and bathrooms, or entire home refurbishments. Having a loft conversion not only helps make the most of unused space in your home, it is also a chance to reinvent and redesign your living space. With this is mind, it’s common to undertake other refurbishment work at the same time.
We know that the idea of “having the builders in” can be daunting, but we are experts at providing you with quality work with the least disturbance possible to you and your family. Assuming we do not need to lower your ceilings, the disruption is kept to a minimum as the work is confined to the loft space, only breaking through into the rest of your home towards the final stages of the build.
